The Challenge

Create a product that allows users to track and monitor statistics on their current life goals while allowing them to personalize and choose to share with others.

How can we bring motivation and community together to complete goals?

Project goals

The goals of this project would focus on it's users, those trying to create and complete goals and much as possible.

Goal 1: Ability for users to track their progress

Goal 2: Allow for community but not force it upon our users

Goal 3: Provide a way to keep To-Do lists and goals all in one place

Key insights

Based on competitive research and user survey interview responses.

Insight 1:

Users don't like that current goal oriented apps do not allow for personalization and for users to customize their goals.

Solution: Providing general goals to 'choose' from, such as categories, and allow users to customize their goals from there.

Insight 2:

Most of the users we interviewed enjoy sharing their goals, however not every users enjoys doing so.

Solution: Providing users the ability to keep a goal private if they would like to. The application will still allow users to be successful when reaching their goals, with or without sharing.

Insight 3:

Users like the celebrate and recognize achievements when finishing a goal. They also enjoy being pushed to continue making new goals next.

Solution: When a user completes a goal, they will be congratulated, maybe offer a question how they feel. Ideally, their friends can also 'react' within the application.

Key features

After all consideration of competitive research and user survey interviews based on their experiences with current similar products, some key application features were noted to include for ideation. Some of these features include allowing for users to create and keep lists, with or without a goal attached. Another feature is tracking of the users statistics, and lastly, encouraging community interactions.

User process

Once all the research was completed, insights and ideal features were established, I defined the process on how users would go about the process of a goal using the application.

Step 1

Create new goal. Category, public or not, goal name, description, add list, time frame

Step 2

Goal displays in dashboard at appropriate timeframe

Step 3

Displays briefly in goals list, along with edit and delete functions

Step 4

Connect with others on similar goals such as friends or others in the community

Ideation and development

This phase includes early stage concepts, branding and overall design development. I started with low-fi wireframes in Figma, followed by developing a branding style, which allowed me to create high fidelity mockups. From there, I prototyped my work, bringing my design to life.

Product testing

After mocking up and prototyping the high fidelity design, I had users run through and test it. This included instructing users to complete certain tasks while I watched and took notes based on their comments, completion, and navigation as they moved through the application.

Change 1:

One major change to the application was to the users charts that displayed their statistics. After designing a brief intro to what the mobile version would look like, and testing that through with users additionally to the desktop, they felt as though rearranging the charts was a good idea. I agreed due to the charts previous order showing current goals first when users are shown their active goals in their main To-Do list. Color also played a factor into this as the mobile version lacked more color without the change and users enjoyed having that eye catching feature as a constant. The mobile versions allows for our users to scroll horizontally through all of their charts.

Change 2:

The second change focused on the notifications portion of the application. Initially, this always led to the dashboard homepage when closed. After consideration of user confusion due to not being brought back to previous pages, a proper overlay was put into place, allowing users to access and close their notifications from any page. The notifications tab is useful because users can see how their friends are interacting with them as well as what they're up to themselves.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, users enjoyed the simplicity of this product and what it has to offer. Overall, the product allows for users to track goals while keeping a To-Do list and interact with their friends and family if they choose. The product allows for users to move at their own pace while also allowing flexibility by keeping personalization on hand. I enjoy the community aspect while steering away from from direct messaging, making this a unique experience. If I were to do this again, I would consider including tracking of more statistics. Maybe this would have community comparison scores. Allowing users to review their goals after completion and how they feel about them, like I initially considered, could also be a great function to have. This product has a lot of great possibilities!
